TRANSFORMATION OF TOWN FACILITIES
|
|
|
|
ROAD
INFRASTRUCTURE |
|
|
This
was the principal plight of the people. Because the
council coffers were red, the council adopted a
participatory approach to solve this problem. The
administration, traditional authorities, the churches,
and the entire population put hands together. There was
general sensitization on financial, material, and manual
labour contributions towards the rehabilitation of the
roads. Both the internal and external elites were
contacted for support. Amity Bank pre-financed the
project and by 30th April, 1996, the road campaign
program was already accomplished. Since
1996, the Kumbo roads are being rehabilitated two times
a year: from May - June and from October - November.
|
|
Nevertheless, a permanent solution is urgently needed to
solve the problem of roads in Kumbo. Since 1996, roads in the Kumbo Urban Municipality have been
maintained at least two times a year. To ensure that
this is effectively done, laterite has been piled in 6
places in the municipality, namely, Kingomen, Mbuluf,
Marem, Romajai, Ntseni and Njavnyuy. This equally eases
collection for the rehabilitation of roads.

BRIDGES & CULVERTS: |
|
|
In
2000, the Kumbo Council constructed a bridge at
Nkuv costing 1,416,000 FCFA. This has gone a long way to
ease the transportation of farm products from that area
to various markets.
Besides the culverts constructed during the Councillor-Micro Project,
culverts have been constructed in almost all the council
areas in the municipality, as the need for it arose,
such as in Tonee, Veekakui, Taabah, Hausa Quarters Mbveh,
Njavnyuy, Mbah road, Mbiame Quarter Mbve, Nkuv, Faah,
Jem, Bamnzeng. |
|
Recently, the Kumbo Council in partnership with
HELVETAS-Cameroon constructed three drainage structures
at the Takum neighbourhood in Kimbo-Squares, at the
entrance to the Tobin New Market and at the entrance to
the New Butchery, costing 2,3400,565 FCFA, with the
Kumbo Council contributing, 5,400,565
cash/kind and HELVETAS, 18,000,000 FCFA.
The construction of the bridge at Takum will ease the
movement of the inhabitants around that area, especially
school children, who have to cross the river to attend
school at the other end. |
|
The bridge at the entrance to the Tobin new market will
facilitate the movement of vehicles in and out of Kumbo,
as the park for vehicles going to Bamenda and beyond is
situated there.
The bridge at the entrance to the New Butchery is specific
for cattle that will be brought in ready for slaughter.
This will also go a long way to prevent the commotion
that might have ensued in the market if these cattle had
to pass through the market to be slaughtered. |

THE FACE LIFT OF
THE KIMBO - SQUARES
|
|
|
The
Kimbo - Squares was a shantytown with kiosks along the
main streets giving the impression of an abandoned town.
During a series of sensitizations, meetings, kiosks
owners, and users agreed on a day when all the kiosks
were demolished. On April 30, 1999 all, the kiosks were
demolished and the debris carried away by owners and
users.
There
was equally a municipal decision, prohibiting the
parking, loading and offloading of all vehicles at
unauthorized parks, especially at the Kimbo-squares.
This was seriously implemented by the forces of law and
other; coupled with the demolition of kiosks, Kimbo-squares
was given a face-lift.

GARBAGE MANAGEMENT: |
|
|
Garbage is collected on a daily basis. Over 50 Cans and
30 other ones were produced by the council and 50 more
were donated by PMUC to the municipality. These were
placed at strategic spots all over the town for refuse
collection. In 2006, 10 large cans were again
fabricated, costing 2,300, 000 FCFA. The council van
goes out daily to empty these cans. This has greatly
reduced the amount of garbage found in town by 75%,
thereby ensuring a general cleanliness in Kumbo town.
Last year there was a competition about the cleanest town in
Cameroon organized by CRTV Morning Safari where
Kumbo came as the 3rd cleanest town. |

|
PUBLIC TOILETS: |
|
|
The water system toilet at the Mbveh market was
renovated and water connected. To reduce congestion on
these toilets, a modern Kenyan type ventilated pit
toilet has been constructed to the north-western end of
Mbveh toilet.
In 2006, the Kumbo Council made a giant stride by destroying the already
old and dilapidated toilet at the Mbveh market and
replacing it with a very modern toilet.
In 2003 and 2004, two new
toilets were constructed at the Tobin New Market and the
Bamkika-ai market respectively. |

A NEW LAYOUT FOR
TOBIN : |
|
The
Tobin eucalyptus forest was a highbinder for thieves,
marijuana addicts, and a nightmare for women and their
female children, for it was a safe ground for rapists.
The trees have been felled and the area plotted into
layout with a well design plan. People have begun to
acquire plots for building and more are still available. |

BEAUTIFICATION OF TOWN
WITH ORNAMENTAL TREES & FLOWERS: |
|
The
Council premises, the Tobin Round About, the Post Office
environment, and the Kumbo Library premises have been
beautified with various flowers and ornamental trees.
In the same vein, the Kumbo Council has implanted
a huge watchdog at the entrance to the Council. This
serves as a source of entertainment to many people who
come to the Kumbo council. |
