TOURIST  ATTRACTIONS  IN  KUMBO

Kumbo is home to many tourist attractions, which are often left unexploited. It is a mountainous area, with undulating plateaus and hills, providing spellbinding panorama that stretches as far as the eyes can see. The numerous caves, the uncountable rivers and the several waterfalls are very inviting to lovers of the natural environments and to visitors.

The streams and valleys usually leave admirers amazed at the wonders nature can provide.  The beautiful scenery makes the place just marvelous; outstanding infrastructures like the St. Theresa's Cathedral, the Bishop’s house and the beautiful hotels. Unfortunately, multitudes worldwide have no idea of this.

Kumbo is one among the few towns blessed with historical caves. When one visits the caves, one can actually see the evidence that the early man lived there. There are such evidences like ash and fireplaces.

Another major tourist attraction in Kumbo is horse riding which is now a growing phenomenon (highly practiced by the Fulanis). Horse race is organized yearly at the Tobin Municipal Stadium by the Ministry of Youths and Sports, sponsored by the PMUC.

Kumbo is a place of great antiquity, with a culture and tradition, where colourful traditional dances of the Jujus and relics of the Shrines are a priceless treasure. The people of Kumbo have preserved their tradition and culture from time immemorial. Kumbo encapsulates the full flavour of the African tradition. In Kumbo there are precious artifacts which whether made of clay or wood perpetuate ideas that have come down from the dawn of time.

Museums contain most of these artifacts with a long history behind them. Some of these artifacts are more than century old and they depict various aspects of the Nso Culture such as dressing, hunting, food, manage and things like masquerade dances.

The presence of good hotels and restaurants adds more taste to the beauty of Kumbo. The nice thing about these facilities is that their services are relatively cheap. Anybody getting into Kumbo for the first time cannot be stranded.

The topography of the Kumbo Urban municipality consists of rolling hills separated by narrow valleys through which streams flow thus creating natural boundaries separating hills. The area is undulating providing for few flat lands available mostly on hilltops.  The rivers are often punctuated with rapid and spectacular waterfalls.

MORE  ABOUT  TOURISM  IN  KUMBO

The tourist industry is one of the strongest growth markets worldwide. Reports say more than 650 million people travel every year and by 2010, the number of tourists is expected to reach one billion. Following Vivianne's feasibility study on tourism in Kumbo, much still has to be done concerning this sector. A clear indication is the fact that there is no Delegation for Tourism, which should be put in place to follow up tourist activities. Consequently, the tourism industry in Kumbo is kind of neglected. According to the study, Kumbo has distinctive advantages that tourists could enjoy: the good tropical climate, tradition, good scenery (mountains, waterfalls, caves), not to talk of the museums that contain artifacts that are more than a century old. Many tourists will hardly think of Kumbo as an ideal holiday destination. Kumbo is hardly thought of when it comes to holidays or tourist destinations but Vivianne has discovered some amazing features that will excite holidaymakers and others who are looking for real thrills.

Vivianne suggests a host of things that could be done to foster the tourism industry in Kumbo, such as devising a means to clean the market and the town itself, maybe by grouping youths to do it from time to time. Again, she talked of improving the transport system in town after 8:PM by this; hotels could have their own taxis or vehicles to carry customers from the hotels and back during late hours. In relation to this, some strategic streets could be lighted for the sake of security and this could also prolong income-generating activities right into the night. In addition, Vivianne proposes that the Ministry in charge of Tourism could organize a bi- annual inspection of hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions, then from time to time the Association of Hotel owners and some groups can do the inspection to see to it that these places are kept up to standards.

Regarding Ecotourism, she recommends that 10 resource persons could be identified to accompany the group of tourists on their tour. They will be in charge of setting up camps and the necessary equipment needed by these tourists, and carrying of the camping equipment from one place to the other. Again, in order to develop the Ecotourism sector, she continues, partnership could be formed with international bodies and by so doing it will offer them an opportunity to visit Kumbo for a tourist adventure. Though Kumbo does not have good ecotouristic potentials like Oku, it harbours good hotels where tourists could spend the night before taking off. Moreso, there are good restaurants that prepare foreign dishes. With the spirit of the Bui Synergy now reigning among the 6 councils in Bui, Ecotourism will go a long way to foster development and relations that this Synergy often longs for.

Nevertheless, Kumbo is home to many tourist attractions, which are often left unexploited. It is a mountainous area, with undulating plateaus and hills, providing spellbinding panorama that stretches as far as the eyes can see. The streams and valleys usually leave admirers tongue tight at the wonders nature can provide.
