LANGUAGES OF COMMUNICATION IN KUMBO
|
Like
many parts of the Republic of Cameroon, the Kumbo Municipality is
blessed to have many languages being used around the area. But the
most predominant languages are:
Lamnso (which is the native
dialect),
English, French
and
Pidgin English.
It is worth-noting that English and French are the Official
Languages of Cameroon, with Kumbo bowing to the rule.
Lamnso
is a language to reckon with around Kumbo because it
is a native language which has been used for several generations by
the indigenes of the Nso tribe and has stood the test of time.
Furthermore, Lamnso has gained more grounds in recent years on
account of its introduction as a study language in some local
organizations and institutions in Kumbo like SIL (International
Language Society). In fact, SIL in collaboration with some local
Christian Churches, organizations and individuals, has effected the
translation of the BIBLE (New Testament) into Lamnso.
Being part of the English colonial Cameroon, Kumbo entertains
English
as a commanding language. English is the fundamental
language of instruction in every school and institution in this
region of the country and consequently being used as a language of
communication in everyday life. However, the most common language of
communication in daily life is
Pidgin English.
As for
French, it is used very limitedly around Kumbo,
although it is taught in all Secondary Schools and in some Primary
Schools around this area. It suffices to remark that the Cameroon
Government is intensifying its efforts to make the Country more
bilingual. In effect, French (just like English) will sooner or
later become an indispensable communication language in Kumbo.
