HEALTHCARE PROVISION IN KUMBO
|
There are two main
hospitals in Kumbo, which are widely known for the good quality of
services they provide. They are: The St. Elizabeth Hospital
Shisong and the Banso Baptist Hospital. Both hospitals
have training schools for health personnel. St. Elizabeth Hospital
presently has a Cardiac Centre that has already sponsored some
cardiac patients in Italy for surgery. A School Of Surgeons has
begun in Banso Baptist Hospital known as the Pan African College of
Christian Surgeons. This school will offer high quality training to
would-be African surgeons.

Nonetheless,
traditional medicine still plays a vital role in lives of the Kumbo
people. It transcends areas where modern medicine has actually
failed to reach or has met with limitations. The dual role played
by some traditional doctors (herbalists and diviners) gives them an
honorable position in society, for it is alleged that they do not
only cure but also heal. They serve a greater need especially where
the patient cannot easily identify the cause of an ailment or cannot
afford the high cost of modern medicine. Some people believe there
are illnesses that only traditional medicine can cure. Some visit
the traditional doctor after having visited the hospitals in vain.
They turn to traditional medicine as their last hope.
Above all Kumbo is benefiting from a Mutual Health Fund organized by GTZ - Sante
in collaboration with the Kumbo Council. The fund will make
people financially viable to purchase health services, by
contributing money to the fund and obtaining a card with which they
can be readily treated if they fall sick. A convention has therefore
been signed with the Banso Baptist Hospital and the Shisong General
Hospital, for people registered in the fund to go to any of these
hospitals for health services. With this project, the health
situation of the people of Kumbo has been improved.
The Mutual Health Fund has made
the people of Kumbo financially viable to purchase health services by
contributing money to the fund and obtaining a card, with which they
can readily be treated if they fall sick. It has been noticed that
most people do not go to the hospital because they do not have
money. With the card people can be easily treated and the card can
be given to somebody else to use. The first card one uses, gives him
an advantage to have a bonus for a second level or second card. For
example a credit card of 10,000 Frs gives a bonus of 5%. A convention
of treatment will be put in place with the hospitals shortlist for
the mutual health fund. (Shisong General Hospital and Banso Baptist
Hospital) By the convention, there will be rules of treatment,
guiding the doctor on what to do illnesses will be separated into
levels, according to their gravity and there is a list of
medications that the hospitals will have to accept. With the
technical assistance of GTZ - sante, it is also envisaged that the two
private hospitals will be given more assistance in the realm of
specialist services, and easy access to drugs. People are also
advised to register as a group to make it work more efficiently and
contribute as a group to come up easily with a tangible sum.
