Due to
the transformation of the Tobin into a built up area,
and because of the need to have forest with natural
trees, the Tayaav forest has been extended. The Tayaav
eucalyptus forest has been divided into 5 compartments,
which is progressively being transformed into a natural
forest. Close to 300,000 eucalyptus trees have been
felled down and replaced with varieties of natural
trees. This forest serves as source of income to the
Council as wood and plank meant for building is sold to
the community at, moderate prices. Presently, close to
120,000 natural trees planted in the Taayav Forest.
Every
year, trees are planted in this forest and at the banks
of the Bui River, by the Tobin New-Layout. A five-year
management and development plan for this forest was
designed to run from 2000 - 2004 with the assistance of
the Bamenda Highlands. The objective of the plan was to
diversify conservation, promotion of non- timber forest
products, acquisition of more land, water source
protection, for recreation and education. The planting
of natural trees in Kumbo has increased and natural tree
nursing is encouraged around the municipality. This has
equally generated income for the Council.
In
2006, the Kumbo Council designed a nursery
project, whereby some natural trees are demonstrated for
the population to copy. The nursery project has variety
of natural trees such as; ornamental trees, water shed
trees, flower trees, sun shed trees, medicinal trees and
fruit trees. With the availability of such a nursery,
the council aims at beautifying the town with ornamental
and sun shed trees, and supply of water shed trees to
catchment areas.
In a bid to fight global warming, and environmental
degradation, the Kumbo Council in 2006 came up
with a project whereby each child being registered at
the Civil Status office of the Council is entitled to a
tree, which is further planted and taken care of. In
effect, this goes a long way to replace those trees that
have been felled down in the municipality and are never
replaced.
