THE  ECONOMY  OF  KUMBO  TOWN

Agriculture is still the main economic activity of the people of Kumbo. The agricultural crops fetching the Kumbo population money are arabica coffee, beans and Irish potatoes. Self-employment is highly practiced in Kumbo through trading. To fight youth unemployment, the Kumbo Council in partnership with GTZ trained some young people with entrepreneurial skills and trained in their respective lines of business. Every long vacation, the Kumbo Council organizes holiday jobs for students and pupils. This helps them to buy some of their school needs when schools resume.

Several trucks load potatoes, beans, maize, and even kolanuts almost on a daily basis to the economic capital of Douala.  Some of these products are exported to other countries like Gabon, Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. There are also numerous NGOs that provide economic and humanitarian services. The explosion in trade has greatly enhanced development in Kumbo, bringing prosperity to its people. The Kumbo Council under the able leadership of Mayor Njong through its numerous projects is aiming at realizing an economic explosion in the municipality. Glimpses of this economic explosion are already being seen with the decentralization of parks, construction of new markets. This has brought a rise to liquidity flow as many more people are now engaged in business.

KUMBO'S  ECONOMY,  AS  SEEN  BY  GHISLAIN

Ghislain in his study first identified those strengths that may foster economic development in Kumbo, which include the fact that Kumbo is typical agro- rural community, commercial crossroads, human resources, climate, tourism potentials, hospitality among others. Weaknesses being poor road network, inadequate financial possibilities, topography (difficult landscape), poverty, lack of processing industries etc.

In order to improve the socio- economic environment, Ghislain points out that street lights be extended a few more hours in order to prolong business activities. Still, he acknowledges the fact that the council has been instrumental in setting up a Business Association of Kumbo and in relation to this he proposes that the council should also help to create an association of economic operators, by so doing, the council would really be moving towards the economic explosion envisaged.

According to Mr. Girard, existing enterprises need to be developed, which in his own view is more important than searching for new enterprises. In the development of entrepreneurship the report states, local entrepreneurs are the best and fastest source of the job creation, for "it is a young population and probably more prone to risk-taking and handwork". The report further says that it is therefore important to identify potential entrepreneurs, organize training sessions, and offer support services.
